Forget Me Not (Wasurenagusa)
Sun 21 Jul 2013, 2:35 am
[Started - Still Accepting]
[This whole first part is a prologue kind of thing]
Kotaro wandered the empty hallways with a blank look on his face. He hadn't bothered to attend his sister's funeral going on just the palace. Everyone else, as far as he knew, were outside paying their respects. He just couldn't bring himself to go. The two were practically inseparable at one point. They had done everything together, but this was one thing he just couldn't do.
The young prince wandered into the throne room. He stopped to look over the enormous, empty space. The last time he remembered the place being so deserted was when their mother had passed. He was only a child then and hadn't understood what had happened. She too, had passed unexpectedly. Something just didn't feel right. He gazed upon the throne where his mother and sister once sat. He couldn't even bring himself to shed a tear for his twin's death. The pain was too much. But, for some reason, he felt like he should feel sorry for his dear friend.
Eri was his personal guard, but was his best friend and future brother-in-law. Kotaro felt obligated to comfort him in some way, but he didn't know how to handle the situation himself. His sister was such a kind soul, so why was she taken from this world so suddenly? The thought angered him for some reason. The one person who he had the most connections with was taken away from him. He was snapped from his thoughts when he heard the echo of footsteps enter the throne room.
"Shouldn't you be attending the funeral?"
Kotaro turned to see his father approaching him. "I'll pay my respect later. I felt...uncomfortable with everyone else around." Kumori nodded and continued with what he had came here to do. "I need to speak with you anyways. About our conversation earlier..." Kotaro glared at his father, interrupting him mid-sentence. "I told you, I will not be forced into a marriage and I really don't think this is the appropriate time to speak about this," he stated and turned to leave.
"I will be hosting a masquerade tomorrow. You will choose your bride or I will choose one for you." Kumori demanded and waited for a response. Kotaro stopped and whipped around to face his father again. "My sister hasn't been dead for more than a day and you're already bringing this up!? Like I'm going to attend something so ridiculous!"
Kumori was beginning to lose his patience with his son. "Stop acting like a spoiled child. I respected your wishes when Kaiya and Eri were to be wed and take over the kingdom, but that is no longer the case. You are the only heir left and you will attend tomorrow evening whether you want to or not. End of discussion."
Kotaro went to object, but resisted the urge to continue arguing. When his father made up his mind, there was no point in trying to change it. He turned and left the room without another word.
The announcement of the masquerade ball was announced later that evening. Everyone within the kingdom was welcome, and all women were required to attend. Each would get to have a dance with the prince and at the end of the night someone would be chosen to be his bride.
Our story begins the evening on the ball...
Kotaro let out a sigh as he watched the room fill up with guests, most of them being women. Eri glanced at the prince, then continued looking out at the crowd. "You could at least pretend to be happy you're here." Kotaro shrugged, crossing his arms. "I know. I just don't understand why he's forcing me to do this now of all times. And why did I have to wear a mask?" Aito smiled, standing on the opposite side of the boy. He placed his hand on Kotaro's shoulder. "Think of it this way, at least you get to dance with a bunch of pretty girls who wont even recognize you." Kotaro couldn't help but laugh a little. It was true, but he still didn't think he would enjoy himself very much. How could he? His sister's death, now the sudden 'engagement'? Why was his father pushing so hard for this?
The prince stumbled forward a few steps as he was pushed towards the crowd. He looked back at Aito, giving an annoyed look as the priest motioned for him to go out and start mingling. He sighed again as he nervously looked back at the crowd. 'Might as well get this over with.' He walked down the steps, but stayed more towards the sides. Aito was right that no one would recognize him with the mask. They weren't even paying attention to him. His father said that it was to keep the girls from pestering him for dances so he'd be able to choose whoever caught his attention and get to know them somewhat. The music was getting ready to start and he knew he'd hear it later if he didn't start finding a dance partner. He surveyed the room and noticed a young girl that seemed to be his age standing by herself.
Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, Kotaro walked up to Aerith. As the music began playing, he managed a smile and extended his hand to her. "May I have this dance m'lady?" He asked and wondered if she'd even say yes to, in her eyes, a total stranger from the blue asking her to dance with him.

The Duke Laguna of Rivendell (their father will make bio soon) and his daughter Aerith and Laurene were inside their carriage, and on their way to the ball. They were family friends with King Kumori, but Aerith had never met his kids. Laurene glanced at Aerith who was nervous and then giggled "What are you nervous for? Everything is going to be fine, they will accept you" Aerith glanced at her and her Father, letting a sigh out "You know people always badmouth me because you adopted me. They say I did it in purpose to take your money and--" Laurene interrupted her with a laugh " I love you as much as if you were my real sister. You should follow the code of being a duchess and everything will be fine" the Duke didn't say anything, besides he wasn't good with such conversations. Upon arriving at the palace, The Duke was the first to exit the carriage, and then a knight came extending his hand to help the girls. Laurene offered her hand as a real dutchess would do and slightly smiled at him without saying a word. On the contrast, Aerith quickly jumped from the carriage and bowed her head at the man "No... thank you..." she said nervously. Laurene glanced at her and sighed. Then the Duke turned at them and said "I'm going to see the King, you should better go dance at the ball and leave a good impression"
As soon as they entered the ballroom, Laurene left Aerith and went onwards to find a male companion to dance with. Aerith was very nervous and didn't want to catch anyone's attention, so she stood behind some other girls. Soon she noticed a man wearing a mask walking towards her but before she could do anything, he had already approached her, asking her for a dance. She glanced at him thinking that she should better accept if she didn't want anyone's attention to be on her. She nervously extended her hand, with an awkward smile "Ah... Yes" not even being polite as a dutchess should be. She had no idea who he was since he was wearing a mask, but even so she didn't even know what the prince looked like. As soon as they stepped on the dance floor, she felt everyone's eyes piercing right through her and murmuring. As they were dancing, she lowered her head as if she was trying to hide it.
Laurene in the meantime noticed Eri amongst the crowd and quickly walked towards him smiling "Sir Eri" she said slightly bowing her head. "I'm sorry about your loss. My father is currently talking to King Kumori, trying to reason him." she said and then slightly blushed " I haven't seen you for years..."

Kotaro could tell that she wasn't used to formalities, but he didn't mind. She looked like a duchess, but the way her demeanor and presence came off reminded him of a commoner. She didn't seem to recognize him, but he could hear a few of the girls nearby whispering about Aerith, though he couldn't quite hear what they were saying. He smiled kindly at the young woman. "Not really your kind of thing either, huh?" He asked, referring to the ball. "You don't have to be so nervous." He glanced around the dance floor. 'My father and Eri seem to be distracted. And I don't see Aito anywhere. Maybe...' He had led her near one of the exits and leaned over so he could whisper in her ear. "Wanna ditch?"
Eri seemed lost in thought as he wandered around the crowd, keeping a close eye on the prince. He stopped when he heard a familiar voice and turned to see Laurene. He bowed to the duchess. "It has been a long time m'lady." He didn't acknowledge her mention about his loss. He seemed to be avoiding the subject actually. He was never the type to say how he felt about anything or show any emotion. Kaiya used to get on his case about it all the time. "I'm glad to see you were able to attend. I trust you and your father have been doing well?"

Aerith maybe acted like a commoner, but she was smart if she wasn't nervous. She glanced at the girls who were whispering about her and then at the man as she sighed. "I just do not understand the purpose of dancing in such dismay. The princess is dead and people are celebrating..." she said as she was avoiding eye contact with him. She then glanced up at him as it seemed as if he was looking for someone and slightly giggled "Are you trying to avoid getting attention too?" she said with not even a slight of politeness. She then leaned to his ear and whispered "We can dance until we reach the exit" without laying an eye on him. She was too nervous to look at him directly.
Laurene noticed that Eri wasn't in any mood to talk to her about the princess. She gently smiled at him as she held her hands behind her back. "My father is giving his condolences to the King, he is very saddened by the event. As for me..." she stopped for a moment to think and quietly sighed. But then quickly glanced up to Eri so that she wouldn't show any sign to make him worried. "I'm fine. I came with my sister but she doesn't like such events" she said with a fading smile. She bowed at him and then raised her head while bowing, saying "You know... Holding things back isn't good. Also you should keep things only to yourself. Open up a bit, please Sir." she said and then turned to leave. She thought she was bothering him.

Kotaro seemed to have a hurt look in his eye as his smile faded to the mention of his sister. "The king has a hard head that is nearly impossible to get through. Once he has his mind made up, his decision is final." He had a hint of sadness in his voice. His smile soon returned when Aerith asked her question, though he began to wonder why she wouldn't look him directly in the eye. "A bit. I was against this thing from the start. Most of the girls here are just trying to get a chance to be with the prince, but how can someone be forced to love a girl they've never met?" He chuckled slightly as they reached the exit and stopped. He took a step back, letting her go. "Shall we go m'lady?" He asked, holding out his hand with a warm smile.
Eri nodded, acknowledging he was at least listening as he looked back towards the crowd. He turned his attention back to Laurene when she mentioned her younger sister. He had heard rumors of the adoption, but figured thats all they were, rumors. His eyes widened slightly to her comment, but when he went to speak, his older brother approached him. "Seems the prince has snuck away with a young lady while you were distracted. I suggest we go and get him before his majesty notices," Aito urged, then smiled at Laurene with a slight bow. "I'll try not to keep him long." He turned and headed for the exit, motioning his brother to follow. Eri watched his brother, then looked at Laurene. "Please excuse me." He bowed, then followed his brother.
The king gave a nod to the Duke as he came to give his condolences about his daughter. "It was unfortunate circumstances, but fate can be cruel at times." He gazed upon the crowd, then turned his attention back to the Duke after a moment. "Was there something you wished to speak to me about?" He asked when he noticed the Duke was still standing there after a moment.

Aerith glanced up to his eyes for the first time, when she noticed his tone changing. "Perhaps I shouldn't talk about the Princess. I'm sorry..." figuring he must have known the princess or at least had a crush at her. She kept listening to him though, but avoiding eye contact again. She just nodded. "You are right. No one can love a girl they've never met. I believe relationships are builded on trust and support, but I guess for rich people like the prince, relationships are based on money and territory." she stopped for a second thinking that she is the daughter of the duke, that means she is rich too. 'Silly me...' she thought as she hopped for the prince not to notice her mistake. She then continued "I don't understand though why the girls want to be with the prince. I mean... Have they ever seen him? I haven't... What if he is fat and ugly? Would they still be with him, or... Is it money and fame that they seek?" she said right before reaching the exit. As they stopped, she glanced at the prince as he offered his hand and then she slightly smiled, waving her hand as a no. "Oh no... No thanks I can walk on my own..." no manners at all. On a second thought though, she changed her mind and grabbed the prince's arm with an awkward smile. She should never forget her manners, that's what the Duke told her in order to not ashame him. "Um... I mean... Yes, sure" and avoided making eye contact with him again. 'He must think I'm crazy...' but oh well, she had no idea he was the prince anyway.
Laurene glanced at Eri's older brother before saying anything else and then listened to their conversation. She bowed slightly to Eri's brother and then glanced back at Eri. But before saying anything else, Eri also bowed to her and told her he had to go. Laurene sligtly sighed as she made a bigger bow to Eri. She was respecting him a lot, and also loved him. Just before Eri was about to leave, she answered "Then, I shall look for my sister. Thank you for the company." she said and glanced at Eri until she lost sight of him. Laurene then took a glance at the crowd looking for Aerith, but she couldn't spot her anywhere. "Where did she go?" she murmured to herself, hoping she hadn't got herself into trouble again. She kept walking around the ballroom, searching for her sister, until one lady approached her and made her stop.
"Good Evening, Miss Laurene." the woman said with a slight smile.
Laurene glanced at the woman and then also smiled back. "Good Evening to you too Miss...?" she asked in curiosity. 'What would she want with me?' She thought.\
The woman then laughed at Laurene's question and answered "That's not important. What is important... Is that I saw your dirty and despicable adopted sister of yours with the Prince. That slut is trying to snatch him away from good ladies like us. Shall I call the guards and tell them to remove her from this ball at once?"
Laurene glared at the woman as she kept speaking sickly of her sister. She loved Aerith as if she was her own sister and wouldn't tolerate anyone who would make bad comments about her. She just raised her eyebrow and glared at the woman as she crossed her arms "I beg your pardon? My sister is not filthy or despicable. And what if she is adopted? What do you know about her to talk like that?" she said and then laughed "As for the Prince, obviously he wasn't interested enough in you, to end up with my... filthy sister." she said full in irony.
The woman bit her lip in anger as she turned around "You will pay for this. I will go talk to the guards now." she said and left.
Laurene didn't answer. She thought that the young woman that the prince had escaped with, might be her sister. 'If that's true then... What will happen? I have to find Eri and talk to him. I must hurry before anyone sees her and badmouths her.' she thought and quickly walked towards the exit to find Eri and Aerith.
The Duke slightly bowed at the King again and then said "We have been friends for many years. If you ever need help, with anything, please don't be resistant about it or shy. I shall help you with all my power. That's all I had to say." he said and then slightly bowed once again, waiting for King's permission.

"It's fine. The subject is just a bit of a sore spot for me is all." Kotaro smiled at Aerith to try and reassure her a little. He kind of laughed at her comment. "Well, I wouldn't say that." He laughed a little harder as she continued. "Harsh. I agree that status shouldn't matter, but you really shouldn't judge a person whom you never met. Maybe the prince is just a bit misunderstood. Who knows? You might get along with him better than you think." He grinned at the thought. It was kind of nice being able to just be himself. But he began to wonder, how would she react if she had known he was the prince from the beginning? His grin faded a little to a look of disappoint when she refused his offer to escort her out of the room, but it quickly returned once she grabbed his arm. He escorted her out of the room and into the hallway. "So why did you come here if you had no intention of meeting the prince in the first place?" He asked out of curiosity as they headed towards the exit of the castle to the gardens. No one would be there to bother him. At least not anytime soon.
Aito and Eri had exited the room through one of the other hallways. "Not unusual for him to sneak off like this, but with a young lady?" Aito spoke his thoughts aloud. "What are we going to do with that boy?" Eri merely shrugged and with and expressionless face, he spoke. "Probably took the opportunity to escape. But he wouldn't have left with just anyone. Either she is trying to get some alone time, or she doesn't realize who he is." Aito nodded in agreement. "True. The prince isn't one to mingle with just anyone. She must have made a good first impression, though the kingdom is not known for taking care of those who need it. You can never tell who would show up with an ulterior motive."
The king's expression softened a little as his friend spoke. "I will be sure to remember that. The same offer goes to you my friend. Which reminds me, Is Laurene doing well?" He seemed in a bit more of a mood to talk now. "And I've heard you've taken in a little stray off the streets. Is she adjusting well to the new lifestyle?" He didn't mean to come off offensive. That's just how he was sometimes. Unless he wanted things his way. Then he'd say or do whatever he wanted without a care in the world.

Aerith also laughed as the Prince said that the Prince might be a bit misunderstood, or even get along with him. "The Prince might be an excellent person, but I don't think that he will even lay his eyes on me..." she said with a slight sigh, knowing that her past status was a barrier for many things. As they kept walking through the hall and finally reaching the exit, Aerith laughed slightly at the Prince's question. "As I said, the Prince might be an excellent person, but even if I wanted to meet him, my status wouldn't allow that. I don't have my eyes set on Prince, as many young women do in here just because of his looks or money or even status." she said as she paused for a moment and glanced at the Prince's eyes before continuing again. "Besides I'm sure that if you live in this Kingdom, you will know the rumors that the Duke of Rivendell adopted a poor filthy child years ago. Well... that's me." she said and then embarrassed stared down at the floor. Besides that was the reason she was trying to hide at the ball.
As Laurene realized after searching and searching the ballroom, that Aerith wasn't in there, she thought that she and the Prince might had walked to the Garden, so she quickly hurried to the hallway, only to meet Aito and Eri. Almost breathless, she managed to called Eri's name. "Eri! Stop, I have to tell you something important!" she said a bit loudly from afar, before reaching their position.
The Duke smiled as the King seemed in better mood now and then he replied "Thank you, your Highness." and then listened to the King's questions about his daughters. "Aerith is struggling sometimes with the etiquette but I'm sure she will do just fine. It's the people who badmouth her that I'm worried for... Laurene thinks of her as her real sister. But how is the young Prince?"

Kotaro shook his head, but continued to listen to her. When Aerith was finished, he finally spoke. "Now, I wouldn't say that." He stopped at the door and turned to her. He reached up and took her mask off, then placed his hand under her chin, making her look at him. "You are a beautiful young woman. Don't ever think of yourself as a filthy child. I'm sure Laurene would agree with me." He smiled, taking his own mask off, then turned to the guard. The guard at the door looked at them as they stopped and bowed to the prince. "Your highness." Kotaro gave him a nod as the guard opened the door. Kotaro smiled at Aerith. "One thing my sister taught me, don't ever judge a book by it's cover. You two would've gotten along well I'm sure." He gestured for her to walk outside. "Ladies first."
Eri stopped when he heard his name called and turned to face Laurene. Aito stopped as well. They saw that she seemed to be out of breath. Eri raised an eyebrow when she said she had something important to say. "What is it?" Aito let out a sigh. They didn't have time for this, but he was a bit curious himself.
"I see. A commoner among the rich can be a harsh life. There are those who will never let her live that down. As for my son, losing his sister has made things difficult on him. They had never been apart for more than a day since they were born and even then they acted like they hadn't seen each other in years. He did not only lose his sister, he lost his best friend." The king sighed as he closed his eyes. "Though he is still a bit childish. I only want what is best for him. I wish he would understand that."
Eri stopped when he heard his name called and turned to face Laurene. Aito stopped as well. They saw that she seemed to be out of breath. As they stopped in front of the door and the Prince took off her mask, she blushed glancing at his eyes shyly. As soon as he smiled and took off his own mask too, Aerith blushed even more staring at his face. 'He... He is handsome!' she thought as she slightly smiled. That very smile though faded at the guards response to the Prince. Aerith then quickly glanced at the Prince as she made a step back "Your highness? You are the Prince?!" she said with a raised tone in her voice as she paused for a moment and then started circling around nervously "What have I done? I didn't even realize he is the Prince, what am I going to do... No wait. He lied to me, I thought he was just someone of a high status." she kept saying to herself loudly, in panic and then turned back at the Prince"Why?"
As Laurene saw both Eri and Aito stopping, she smiled and then stopped to catch a breath. "Eri the Prince is with my sister, but she has no idea that it's the Prince who she is with... And at the ball people saw them leaving together and they already started badmouthing her. If we don't find them, they will start blaming and lieing about my sister. Please let me help you find them." she said without pausing even once, like a flowing river as she was worried. She then glanced at Eri's eyes waiting for approval.
The Duke lowered his head upon hearing the King and then he nodded "Yes quite indeed, but I'm sure Aerith will become a proper lady like her sister." he said and then glanced back at the King "It must be hard for the Prince... But tell me. Now that she is gone and the wedding is cancelled, doesn't that mean that it's time for the Prince to take responsibility and marry a young lady? Do you have your mind set on someone?" he asked full in curiousity.

The prince laughed at Aerith's reaction. "Come," he said and motioned for her to follow him outside. Once the guard closed the door, he started to explain. "To tell the truth, I didn't want you to know at first. I debated whether to tell you after what you said about me. But...it was nice to be myself. For someone to treat me like any other person and not pretend to be nice to me because of who I am." He walked over to a rose bush, but something was strange about their color. "My sister planted these and took care of them. She used to say that I was no different from these roses." He squated down and picked one. "They're rare to find. They only grow one place in the world. Unlike other roses, they only bloom during a full moon." He stood up and walked over to Aerith. The rose sparkled as if there were diamonds covering it when it was under the glow of the moonlight. "They don't belong here. They hide their inner beauty from the world for fear of what others might do. She said they were 'A jewel that didn't know where it belonged.'" He smiled kindly at her, moving her hair behind her ear before placing the rose in her hair. "I never wanted this life. I was born in it. I've never even been off the castle grounds. My sister was the only thing keeping me here."
"Your sister?" Eri was a little puzzled as he looked at his older brother. Aito laughed. "So neither of them know who the other is I see. Don't worry m'lady. Even if the other guards were to try something, he wouldn't let them unless it was under the king's order. I highly doubt his majesty would send them after one of the Duke's daughters," he explained with a reassuring smile. "Come. I'm sure he's out in the gardens. He has been spending a lot of time there lately since the late princess passed." Eri nodded in agreement as he turned to Laurene again and waited for her to follow before continuing.
"Yes." The king stood up and glanced around the throne room. "I gave him a choice. He could either choose his bride, or I would for him. He seems to refuse both ideas." The king turned to his friend before continuing. "He never wanted to take the responsibilities of this kingdom. He's threatened to renounce his throne before, but it was Kaiya who convinced him not to," he explained to the Duke. "I fear if I push too hard, he will consider that decision again, but I'm not sure what else I should do."

Aerith hesitated for a moment when the Prince told her to come. "Um... I..." she uttered softly while raising her hand but in the end followed him outside. She listened to him quietly and didn't even dare to glance at him as she was embarrassed. 'How could I say such words about the Prince! I must make it up to him.' she thought while listening to him. After leading her to a rose bush, her eyes glowed from the prettiness of the flowers as she slightly smiled 'A-Amazing!' she thought with gasp, listening to the Prince. As soon as she noticed that the Prince was about to cut one, she finally talked. "Wait! What are you doing I thought they were..." she paused after the Prince turned back at her and placed one at her ear. "...Rare." she uttered softly just before blushing like a tomato. She then lowered her head and said "I'm very sorry for insulting you. I didnt know you were the Prince!
Laurene smiled as Eri listened to her and eventually allowed her to follow them. She then walked right behind him, admiring his back. She really was in love with him but never admited it. She knew that Eri loved the Princess so she nevr made a move, instead all these years she was always there for him. "Do you think that this is bad?" she asked referring to the Prince and Aerith.
The duke happily smiled at the King's response as he then glanced at him "And I assume he hasn't quite chosen yet a bride?... If that's the case then we can arrange a marriage with my oldest daughter Laurene. We have status and money. How about it my King?" he said hoping the King to agree.

"They are rare. You're the first girl in the kingdom to receive one. I'm counting on you to take care of it for me. Though it doesn't compare to your beauty." Kotaro could be such a flirt. He laughed when she started apologizing and shook his head. "Don't worry about it m'lady. I took no offence to it. You're different from the other girls. You aren't interested in money or power. But you could stand to loosen up a little. Just be yourself," he said as he gently poked her forehead.
Eri shook his head. "Who knows. He is allowed to choose his bride, but he doesn't want to. I think right now he just wants someone he can talk to." Aito nodded in agreement. "Yes, but you know the prince. That boy is a big flirt with every pretty face he sees after all." He laughed a little as they approached the doors to the garden. Eri walked over and opened the doors for his brother and Laurene to go through. Kotaro looked over at the door as it opened and let out a sigh, rubbing his head as he turned to the small group. "Well, guess they found me."
The king shook his head. "No, he hasn't. He refuses to choose his own it seems." He looked at the Duke with an intrigued expression at the offer. "Laurene? Well, they have known eachother for many years. He might be more willing if it's not a complete stranger." He looked back at the crowd as he thought about it. He smiled at his friend and motioned for him to follow. "Come, let us go somewhere more private to make the arrangements. I'll have the guards declare the night over and have them escort everyone out."

Aerith smiled as the Prince kept talking and reassuring her that everything was fine. She then touched the flower at her ear with a smile and said "You sure know how to charm the ladies Prince. I wonder why I never met you... or the princess" she said the last word lower as she didn't want him to feel bad and then continued "I mean... Me and my sister were always coming to the palace in holidays because of our father's relationship with the King... But I guess I was too busy racing with the guards" she said as she laughed in embarrassment. It was true indeed. When Laurene and Aerith were coming to the palace, Laurene would always go flirt with the other guards, and Eri of course but Aerith would only horse race with them. She then turned at the Prince and glanced him at his eyes, rarely. "What is your hobby?" she said, sounding excited.
Laurene nodded as she listened to Eri "I think you are right. The prince needs someone to talk to, talk about things he can't share with you or me. But to be honest... I'm worried. I'm worried because if he keeps being close to Aerith, he might think of her as his bride one day." she stopped, lowering her head and moving her hand close to her chest. "It's not like I have something against my adoptive sister, but her past status can't be changed. And I cannot allow her to ruin my family's no matter how much I love her." she said as she kept walking behind Eri without raising her head. When they arrived at the Garden, she runned to Aerith as she shouted "Aerith!"
Aerith didn't even noticed they were looking for them, until she heard her sister's voice. She then immediately glanced behind her, only to face Laurene, Eri and his older brother. With a sad look, she lowered her head to apologize "I'm sorry... I didn't know he was the Prince until now." Laurene stared at the Prince as Aerith was talking and then back to her, extending her arms to touch Aerith's shoulders. "Aerith, you should head back home. People are gossiping about you. I will tell the driver to come pick you up" she said and hugged her. If you could observe her closely, she wasn't really caring for Aerith. It was all an act to look nice to other people. In fact, she was really jealous of her and would do almost anything to get her out of her own way.
Aerith hugged back Laurene and then she backed away as she heard that she should leave first. "What... What about you and Father?" she asked as she lowered her head. Laurene then sighed as she made a step back and smiled, touching Aerith's hair. "We will come later, when Father finishes his talk with the King. Don't worry, now go wait for the carriage." she said and gently pushed her. You could see that she wanted her to leave badly.
Aerith sighed as Laurene pushed her to leave and then glanced back at the Princes eyes, as she lowered her glance again. "Yes... Good night." She said and bowed deeply to everyone and then turned to leave. Laurene then said "And what is that silly flower you have in your hair, take it off." it made Aerith stop. Without turning back Aerith nodded and took the flower off her hair, keeping it in her hands as she then ran away quickly, almost about to cry. Aerith's character would change in front of her father or Laurene. She was scared of both of them, but had the littlest idea that Laurene actually hated her.
(what a twist plot xD)
The Duke grinned as the King seemed to be interested in his proposal and then quietly followed the King "Yes my King. I'm glad we can talk about this." as he glanced over the crowd, wondering where his daughters are as he couldn't spot them anywhere.
(And... what if aerith's bro is actually the one who killed the princess? since he is a hired assassin. what do u say? )

(Lol i don't know why but it kind of reminds me of Romeo and Juliet for some reason xD)
Eri glanced at Laurene as she spoke, but his face remained expressionless. He turned his attention to the prince when they arrived to the garden. Aito walked over to the prince and stood by him. "I had a feeling you would be here."
Kotaro looked at Aerith when she asked what his hobby was. Did he really even have a hobby? He had always done what he was told, for the most part. He didn't get the chance to answer when Laurene interrupted. He looked at Aito and gave him a crooked smile, then listened to Laurene speak to her sister and for some reason, it rubbed him the wrong way, but he kept his mouth shut. It wasn't any of his business...right? When Aerith said good night, he looked down at the ground. He wanted to talk to her more. Apart of him wanted to go after her, but he knew Eri and Aito wouldn't have let him if he tried.
Aito smiled at the prince. "Come inside. Your father will notice you're gone at this rate." Kotaro looked up at him. "Yeah..." He turned and began to head inside, Aito soon following him.
Eri waited for the two to go inside before he looked at Laurene. "About your comment earlier....The prince was free to choose his bride, but he had no interest in getting married or taking over this kingdom. However, I am no different from your sister. Aito and I had the same father, but I never met him. I grew up with my mother in town, living like a street rat as you nobles would put it. The princess chose me still knowing my past." His expression softened slightly as he spoke of his fiance. "If he were to choose her, you should be happy for her despite her status. She is your sister now after all." He had no idea of Laurene's hate towards her sister. He could sympathize with Aerith because of his own past. He offered his hand to Laurene. "Come. We better head back before your father sees you missing as well."
The king led the Duke into the war room and dismissed the guards standing inside. Once the door closed, he turned to the Duke. "I agree to allow Laurene to marry my son. I want to have the wedding as soon as possible." He walked over and sat down in a nearby chair. "The wedding shall be in two days, unless that is too short notice for you my friend?"

Laurene saw the two of them going back inside and then glanced at Eri who started talking. He started talking in favor of Aerith, making her eyes brightness to soon fade. She was jealous of her sister. Why they all liked Aerith and not her? What did she lack that Aerith had? Her hand started shaking a bit, not being able to stand listening to Eri talking about Aerith. When he offered his hand to her, she looked away for a second to calm down and then faked a smile, holding his hand, but she did not move. Instead she stopped and called his name. "Eri..." she said softly and then glanced at her hand, holding his and slightly squeezing it. She then let go of it and smiled with a sad expression. "Let's go inside..." She thought that Eri liked Aerith too, that he soon won't even talk to her. She had not even confessed her feelings towards him this whole time. She was afraid of the consequences, and she knew that Eri and Aerith were pretty much the same. They shared the same filth that a noble person shouldn't be close to.
As soon as they entered, she let go of Eri and slightly bowed to him, her mood being not the best. "I shall go see my father. Thank you Eri" she said and turned to find the Duke.
Aerith in the meanwhile had arrived at the carriage. "You are leaving early Miss?" the driver asked her politely, opening the door for her. Aerith sighed and placed her foot on the first step, but soon backed away. "No... I better inform my Father first." she said and left just before the driver deeply bowed to her. She run back inside the palace, asking the guards for her father's whereabouts, leading her to the war room. She dismissed the guards and was ready to knock the door, but she heard Laurene's name and stood still, listening to their converstation. Upon hearing the King's and Duke's plans she gasped, covering her mouth so that she wouldn't be heard.
She soon heard steps and panicked, making a fuss as she wanted to quickly leave the place. Laurene finally reached the room, hearing the ruckus, she saw Aerith's dress just before closing a door. She smirked 'So she is still here... I will show her.' she thought and gently knocked the door, waiting for a response.
The Duke nodded to the King and then replied "Of course, in two days as you said my King. We shall inform those two as soon as possible." he said just before he heard the door knocking.

Eri stood there paitiently as he waited for Laurene to take his hand. He began to wonder what was on her mind, but knew it wasn't his place to ask. One thing he did learn from living in the palace, never pry into the lives of others. When she finally took his hand, he turned to lead her, but stopped when he noticed she hadn't moved and called out his name. Turning back to face her, he could feel her hand tighten around his. He nodded to her suggestion to go inside and escorted her towards the palace. Once inside, he looked back at the young dutchess as she let go of his hand and bowed to him. "Your welcome m'lady," he said with a returning bow and watched as she walked ahead of the others. He looked at his brother who seemed to be escorting the prince and decided it was better not to follow. He went back outside, heading towards the front of the castle.
As he arrived, he had just missed Aerith. He noticed that the Duke's carriage was still here and wondered if she had gotten lost or maybe even sidetracked. He shrugged it off and began patrolling the courtyard to make sure the rest of the guests had left.
Kotaro arrived as Laurene knocked on the door with Aito not far behind. Before he could speak, he could hear his father calling her inside. Aito stepped forward and opened the door for them. "After you m'lady," he said with a smile and a slight bow. "Perfect timing. We have some news for the two of you," Kumori announced as he waved both Laurene and his son inside, giving a wave for Aito to close the door once they entered. Kotaro raised an eyebrow, following the dutchess inside the war room. 'What is he up to...?' He thought, having a bad feeling about the situation.
Aito shut the door once the young ones were inside. He sighed. "The prince will not be pleased with this..." He glanced at the room where Aerith had hidden. It happened to be the prince's bedroom. 'Probably will lock himself up and sulk like usual. And without the late princess here to comfort him, he may not come out anytime soon.' He turned and walked down the hallway to go find his brother.

Laurene entered the room with a grin on her face as she glanced at the Prince thinking of ways to take revenge on Aerith... She would always steal what's hers... , and then turned to the King as she deeply made a bow by slighting kneeling. "What news my King? Are they good or bad?" she said with a calm voice, trying to be as polite as she can to be in King's favor. But whatever the news were, she didn't care. The news that she would prefer to hear, are probably never even going to be mentioned. All these years she kept wondering why she had to fall in love with Eri and not someone noble. What was so special about him anyway? Whatever the news were... They would never affect their relationship nor her future and it pained her more that Eri was like her adopted sister.
When Aerith entered the room, she didn't even realize it was the Prince's. She took a look around, admiring the decorations, the luxury and details as she gasped in enthusiasm. "Whoah what is this place...?" she murmured to herself while staring at the ceiling which was painted. "I hope no one is coming anytime soon because it's a bit difficult to hide in here...". She made a few steps back and forth, holding her hands together and sighed, thinking of what she had heard earlier about the Prince and her sister. It can't be true... That's what she kept thinking.

The king gave a slight nod to Laurene as she bowed to him. "The news depends on your perspective of things." His attention turned to his son for a moment, making Kotaro feel a little uncomfortable. "Since you have refused to choose a bride, I have arranged with the Duke for the two of you to marry." Kotaro's eyes widened as he looked at Laurene. Without hesitation, he pointed at her and glared at his father. "Why would I want to marry that stuck up little brat!? Does it really have to be her? At least let me marry her sis--" "Silence!" Kotaro stopped and slowly lowered his arm when his father interrupted him. "I did not ask your opinion on this matter. Now apologize." Kotaro clenched his fist as he lowered his head. He turned to Laurene and bowed slightly. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said such things." He bowed to his father and the Duke. "Excuse me...," he said as he turned and left the war room, heading towards his room.
The king sighed as he looked at Laurene. "I apologize for my son's behavior. He doesn't mean any of it. He merely doesn't know how to take the news being against marriage from the beginning," he explained to the dutchess, wondering her opinion on things since Kotaro didn't give her much of a chance to speak.
Eri walked back towards the entrance and noticed that the carriage was still there. He began to wonder whatever happened to Aerith. He had thought she would've been gone by now. He headed inside to see if she had gotten lost somewhere. It wasn't hard to do when you didn't visit the castle often. He also wondered what was holding up the Duke and Laurene. Maybe they had planned to stay the night? It wouldn't be the first time after all. He did wonder what Laurene was going to tell him earlier before she ran off on her own. 'She seemed like she wanted to tell me something...'
Aito walked into the throne room and looked around, rubbing his head with a confused expression. "Where did he run off too?" He whispered to himself, refering to his younger brother. Eri had a tendancy to go off on his own. Only the late princess could find him whenever he did that. With a sigh, he thought it be easier to give up and leaned up against a wall with his arms crossed.

Laurene didn't even expect these kind of news... Her marrying the Prince? She was surprised at first as she gasped and then quickly covered her mouth with both her hands, glancing at her Father with doubts, hoping that everything was just a joke. The Duke just smiled, being unaware of the whole situation. He thought he was doing a good thing for the country, and indeed it was. But Laurene and Kotaro were not in love with each other... They had someone else in their hearts. After a few moments of just starring shocked, Laurene tried to utter a few words but Kotaro interrupted her. She was sad, she knew that if she would marry the Prince, there would be no way for her to be with Eri. Hearing him saying bad things about her, she lowered her head and sighed but soon raised her head again in surprise, listening to him saying what she didn't want to hear. Maybe no one understood what Kotaro wanted to say, since the King interrupted him, but Laurene understood. She ignored Kotaro's comments about her and faked a bright smile "I'm sorry for not reaching your standards" as he apologized. Even though she was smilling, you could notice that her eyes were on fire, ready to kill someone. She held it in.
After Kotaro left the room, Laurene glanced to the King and lowered her head, holding her hands together "I think this is a wonderful idea my King but I'm only worried that Kotaro won't like me... Or should I say... He doesn't like me at all? I would do anything for my kingdom, my country. Whatever the sacrifises are." and indeed, that was what Laurene was like. If it was for her country, she would do anything even if it didn't benefit her, and that means even not confessing her love to Eri.
Aerith in the meantime was unaware that she was in the Prince's room. She was in a dillema. Should she go outside, or stay inside until she hears no voices. Even if she chose to stay, she had nowhere to hide and she didn't want to go out either, risking the chances of being seen. She sighed as she wandered around, stopping in front of a big bookcase. She gently took out a green book with a hard cover. The title was " Tales of an Invisible Man " too bad Aerith almost didn't know how to read. She opened the first page and tried reading it out loud. "Th... Thi... this is a... s..tory..."

The king smiled at Laurene and shook his head. "He'll warm up eventually. I was the same way with his mother at first. Over time I grew to love her greatly and wish she were still here today. I'll send for your things in the morning. For now, why don't you leave him be and get some rest. The wedding is in two days and we have much to prepare for at daybreak."
Kotaro opened the door to his room and began to walk inside, but stopped as he heard a voice and lifted his head. To his surprise, Aerith was standing there in his room with her back to him. He had thought she had went home. His anger almost vanished in an instant as a warm smile crossed his lips. He quietly shut the door and walked up behind her, leaning in close to her ear. "You know, it's unladylike to enter a man's bedroom without permission, especially one of royalty," he teased and waited for her reaction.
Eri finished his patrol of the garden and headed inside, running into his older brother in the process. "Can I help you?" He asked. Aito crossed his arms and pushed off the wall where he was waiting. "So, you heard the news?" Eri nodded, unammused by the situation. "I'm sure the prince will be in his room for a while?" Aito nodded. "I assume so. In the morning, I'll see about getting him out. As for the rest of the night, I need you to keep an eye out and make sure he doesn't sneak off on his own."
"I wouldn't put it past him," Eri agreed with a nod. "I'll be sure to keep a patrol on lookout for him. What're your plans for the night?" He asked his brother with a sigh. Aito uncrossed his arms. "I need to head into the city. There have been reports of a possible attempt on the prince's life. May even be the same person who..." He stopped himself, seeing the look on his brother's face. He placed his hand on his younger brother's shoulder. "If it is, I ensure you, you will be the first one to know and the last they'll see." Eri nodded and brushed past his brother as he walked into the castle. Aito watched him for a moment, then continued through the garden and towards the gate for the city.

Laurene bowed to the King once again and then responded "With all respect my King, I think it would be wise for me and my father to return back to our main residence for the night. I think it's not good spending the night here, especially after the prince's reaction." she said and glanced at her father, hoping that he would understand her intentions.
The Duke didn't know what to say, or how to act. It might have been an insult to the King, but given they have been friends for years, such thing probably would never happen. He glanced at both Laurene and the King and then said "Well if the King allows it..." Laurene interrupted him and added "Besides Aerith is at home and I don't want to let her stay alone." The Duke slightly laughed but tried to compose himself in front of the King. "I think my daughter is right. It is not fair for us to stay here while Aerith is alone." he said, waiting for the king's action. Who knew that Aerith was still in the Palace... Moreover in the Prince's room. If she was found out, what scandals would this incident unfold?
Aerith had no idea that the Prince had entered the room and stood right behind her until he leaned to her ear. She was so absorbed in the book while trying to read it, but got interrupted by the Prince. As soon as she heard his voice, she felt chills all over her body, and she slowly closed the book, closing her eyes and letting out a big sigh. "Oh it's you!" she said and turned to Kotaro as she glared at him "I never intented to act like a lady... But I'm sorry for intruding." she said and made a few steps around him, trying to slip the book back to the bookself unnoticed. She didn't want to reveal to anyone that she couldn't read. She had dyslexia.
After putting the book but to its place, she turned to the Prince and slightly bowed " I heard the news... Congratulations." she said with a forced smile and then added "Oh and... I should get going back to home now. I don't want any troubles... See you again at the wedding..." she said and turned to leave, her head filled with thoughts such as the Prince's thesis on the wedding, or if he has anyone he is interested it. She was a bit sad, the news were shocking but it's not like she could do anything.
Squall in the meantime was at the town's tavern... drunk. He had just completed his mission of 2 months, trying to cause an <

The king listen to Laurene's reasons and the Duke's. He nodded in agreement. "I understand. It's late. Be sure to be careful on your journey back." He stood and turned to his friend. "Tomorrow evening then?" He asked as he extended a hand towards the Duke with a smile.
Kotaro stepped back as Aerith moved past him and laughed slightly. "You're not the type of lady I'm used to being around at least." He watched her put the book away, then bow to him and his smile faded. "Um...yeah...thanks," he said with a sigh. When she said she was going to leave, he took a step forward. "Wait." He stopped for a second, not sure why he was stopping her as he tried to think of his reasons. He enjoyed her company. And maybe she could get his mind off of things. "I...The um, Duke and Laurene are supposed to be staying at the castle tonight. I'll take responsibility for keeping you here. Just...please don't go," he pleaded, hoping she would agree to stay with him for a little longer.
Aito wandered through the quiet city. The few lively areas were the taverns. But, for the most part, things seemed peaceful within the kingdom. He stopped not far from the tavern Squall was at and glanced at him. A drunk. That seemed to be all he looked like at the moment. He turned to continue on his way. "Captian!" He turned to see one of the guards running up to him and salute him. It was a newer recruit, which they actually needed a few more. "Sir, I know I just started but, why are we out looking for someone who most likely fled the city?" Aito sighed. He hated dealing with the recruits. He usually put his brother in charge of it. "We can't take any chances. We're low on guards and the prince isn't too happy about the change of circumstances. We can't risk anything happening to him now get back to work." "Y-yes sir..." The boy left without another word. Aito let out another sigh. Recruits.

The Duke also extended his hand and did a handshake with the King as he smiled "Of course! We have been friends for all these years, and we now even marry our children. I'm looking forward it." she said and slightly bowed to the King as he turned to leave.
Laurene also smiled and then added "I can't express my happiness, knowing that I will marry your son makes me feel the happiest woman on the Earth."... definitely not. I'm doing this for my father and to get revenge on Aerith. She thought with a grin as she bowed to the King and followed her father. On their way to the carriage, the Duke glanced at Laurene who had fallen behind and asked her "Are you not happy with these plans?" Laurene slightly shook her head and faked a smile. "I'm fine dad. I want to be a good Queen and wife, and of course make you proud." They soon reached the Carriage and the servant opened the door, helping the Duke and Laurene to step on it.
Aerith slightly laughed at Kotaro's response "There is always a first time for everything." she said and put slowly and secretly the book back to the self. As she was about to leave, but shocked at the prince's command to stop, she turned back at him "What is it?" she asked. After hearing the Prince's reason she made a few steps and stood right in front of him, glancing at his eyes as she slightly giggled "You seem like you don't want me to go." she said and then lowered her glance as she started to think of her options. She didn't want to go back at her house with Laurene, it was awkward for her, knowing they would get married. But also staying here with the Prince might create more scandals. She sighed and glanced again at the Prince as she starting blushing and then folder her hands "Well take responsibility then! But... were will I be staying?" she asked, kind of worried of what is going to happen next.
Upon arriving at their house, the Duke shouted "Aerith, we are home. We have some news for you sweatheart. Come downstairs" ... No response. He shouted again "Aerith? Are you there?" Laurene stepped in the house, followed by the servant and then questioned him as she heard her father calling out Aerith multiple times with no response from her. "Did you bring her here?" the seervant shook his head "No she never entered that carriage without you." Laurene confused glanced at her dad "Where is she then?"

The king shook his hand with a warm smile. The duke was one of the few that he was kind to. He turned to face Laurene and gave a nod to her words. He watched as the two of them left before sitting back down, calling in one of the guards standing outside the door to get an update on what was happening outside the castle walls.
Kotaro rubbed his head, a bit unsure if he was asking too much. He looked down at her and shook his head. He didn't want her to go. Usually, he'd want to be alone. But he felt comfortable with her. He noticed her cheeks redden slightly and smiled as his arm fell back to his sighed. When she asked where she would stay, he hadn't really thought that far ahead. Asking her to stay was merely a spure of the moment. "Well..." He thought for a moment before continuing. "I guess you could stay in my sister's room tonight. No one will bother you there. And if they do, they'll have to answer to me." He held his hand out to Aerith for her to take it. "Why don't we go out to the balcony for now. I'd like to talk with you some more, if it's alright with you of course."
Aito turned and continued walking though the city. He took another glance at Squall, but didn't say anything. He was trying to think if he remembered his face from somewhere, but couldn't quite piece it together. He watched as a few people walked the streets. For the most part it was pretty quiet. The city had it's problems with crime. Ocassionally he had even been attacked while out on his own. Some of the soldiers killed. There were many that were against the king for the way he treated his subjects. The guards always had to deal with it though. They didn't even have enough to defend themselves if the city was attacked. Their main problem however, was Raven. No one knew his real name. He had sent someone else to do it, that was about all he knew besides that they may still be in the city. Perhaps both of them were...
Raven was perched atop the bar out of sight, watching as Aito left. The captian of the guard. He did his homework on the man. One of the hardest men to kill. He would be their main problem with getting to the prince. He stood, whistling to get Squall's attention before jumping down the side into the alleyway while he waited.
